Basel Boy's Choir

Around 40 boys and 30 men meet twice a week in the venerable bishop’s residence on Basel’s cathedral hill for rehearsals, singing both spiritual and secular works. The choir’s diverse repertoire ranges from Renaissance a cappella music to the great oratorios of the Romantic period right through to folk songs and popular tunes.

This exceptional choir has performed in numerous European countries, as well as in Russia, the USA and South Africa, and has appeared at major music festivals. For example, it has sung at the Lucerne Festival with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, and in Luxembourg with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. The soloists from Basel Boys' Choir also regularly perform opera and concert roles in Switzerland and abroad, such as the three boys in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”. The younger singers also often appear in operatic productions at Theater Basel.

Highlights in the choir’s history include performances of Mendelssohn’s “Elias” (2015), Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” (2016) and Handel’s “Messiah” (2017). Thanks to its collaborations with dedicated music teachers, the KKB has reached an outstanding musical level, with many former singers from the Boys’ Choir having already embarked on a professional career in music.
